The Third Object was designed to alienate the family from their television. This pillow-like object hijacked the family television and changed the channel on its own. The family member then had to hug or punch the object to watch uninterrupted television. If they let go of it, it would continue to change channels or turn the power on and off. I was interested in how a foreign object can change family conversation, body language, gestures, and spatial relationship. I wanted to change the relationship the family had with their television set by giving it a personality with behaviors. I put these objects in two separate homes. I found that the family members did not get angry at the object, instead they became angry at each other for not being able to work the device correctly. This is something we did not expect. I was focused on the physical interaction so much that I did not account for the emotional reaction. Collaborative project with Christiane Holzheid.
